Where do your ideas come from?
I see art everywhere all the time.  I glance at tree bark and see an elephant in a boat.  In the waiting room at the Dr.’s office, I see patterns in the wallpaper that remind me of flying cats.  I see landscapes in the grocery store, I see abstracts in the folds of my comforter, I see a million different odd things in odd places.  If I could, I would paint all day every day trying to capture them all.

Will you paint me a dancing water buffalo or a whale on wheels?
Yes!  The older I get, the more I enjoy working on commissioned paintings.  I have more experience and more confidence than years ago, so commissioned pieces are more fun now.   Please click here for more information about ordering something special.

What is up with your signature on your art?

I have always signed the BACKS of my paintings and drawings the same way and I will continue to do this.  They have titles, dates, and my signature which is my initials.  For many years, I signed the front of each piece with my initials and the year of completion.  In late 2008, I opened a new site, SimpleTermsArt.com, and at that time I began signing the fronts of my creations with either FG (if the item was published on FlyingGirl.com) or ST (if the item was published on SimpleTermsArt.com).  Beginning 1/1/11, I now sign the fronts of all paintings with my first name.  Here is why…

When I was in high school, I had a very bad experience with an art teach who humiliated me and belittled me.  One day, he screamed at me in front of the class because I was signing my drawings, “MELISSA”.  He shouted, “Who do you think you are, Picasso?!!  Signing your art with one name?  You think you are so great?!  That is ridiculous!”  I used only one name because my full name is kinda long and obtrusive.  Not because I thought I was Picasso.  But that teacher sure made it very clear to me that I should never ever make the mistake of thinking I am anything special.

I decided 2011 is my year for reclaiming my power.  And I decided I am special.  J  That means I get to sign my art with my one name from now on.  I have no plans to change my signature again.  Melissa suits me just fine.

Why are your prices so high/low/confusing?
It is hard to price art.  Especially in this economy.  If I worked in any other profession, with my training and experience, I could bill a great rate for my time and enjoy a nice living.  Because I make art, and because art is a luxury for most folks, I know that is not possible.  So I try to make my work affordable for real people but still charge enough to survive and to keep painting.  That is hard to do.

How do I order the painting of the red dog / pink house / clown car that I saw on eBay two years ago?
I thank you for your interest in my work!  ALL available pieces are now shown here.  If you do not see it on that page, it is no longer available.  You might find the image you want on a print here.  Or you could always commission something special.

Can I get the image I want on a cutting board / thong / bathrobe?
Probably.  I design products featuring my art for the custom manufacturer Zazzle.com.  But I also have accounts with CafePress.com and a variety of other print-on-demand retailers.  They offer all sorts of other products.   So if you see an item you want on one of those sites, just email me and ask me to design a bathrobe or whatever for you.  Be sure to let me know which image you want on the merchandise.
