Because this one-of-a-kind piece is highly textured, the images below may show faint "hot spots" caused by light reflecting off the peaks of paint.  Additional scans are available on request.

(Details)

This is a truly unique, engaging painting. Filled with subtle hues in motion. And unexpected textures. Filled with secrets. It is a haunting, beautiful painting that calls to viewers. This piece continues my interest in the merging of language and art with two phrases painted in several parts across the canvas. On three dark swatches in the center of the piece are these words, “Love for me has never been… easy or pretty… or simple or clean.” Against a dirty white swatch at the bottom of the image are the words, “Love has always been my favorite drug.”

This piece evolved over a long period of time and you can see layers and layers of color and texture and line work. There are always new things to see in this piece that feels both old and warn and urban and gritty. It features a powerful heart painted in ripe plums and raspberries and soft cool grays and an exciting expressionist composition filled with deep, rich colors.

I am hopeful that this complex image of love will bring some comfort and peace to a fellow passionate romantic out there who shares my most benign addiction.

How Addiction was created.....   I cannot possibly recreate the evolution of this image. I worked on it for a long time and I no longer remember exactly how it unfolded. But I can tell you that there are countless layers of color – some applied with brushes, some with rags, some with palette knives, some with my hands. And I can tell you that I used a variety of dental tools and ice scrapers and knives in order to create the textures that define this piece. Finally, I used tiny detail brushes to paint that gorgeous full heart and to add the words and certain highlights.

(The image continues around the staple-free sides.  This is a digital photo.  The scans above are more accurate.)

Addiction was painted on a large gallery wrapped canvas with staple-free sides.  It looks beautiful displayed as it is without framing.  Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass.

Love for me has never been… easy or pretty… or simple or clean.

Love has always been my favorite drug.
