Adulthood is such a bright cheery
treat. It makes me smile every time I see it. I love the
colors and I love that lone tree, but most of all, I love the words
and the overall sentiment. This
painting continues my interest in the subtle inclusion of
language in art with a pair of sentences painted in small letters in the lower right
corner. The words read, "Childhood was never much fun for
me. So I think I am entitled to an extra-fun adulthood."
This playful sunny landscape is sure to brighten the home or office of some other happy grown-up out there who shares my glee at having survived childhood. It has been a LONG time since my last day in class, and I still sometimes stop and think to myself how wonderful it is that I never have to go to school again! Being an adult is so much more fun than being a kid ever was. This gorgeous piece was created in layers. First, I primed the wooden panel with black acrylic gesso and then laid down a bold expressionist painting filled with deep blues and dark greens. I carefully pulled a palette knife across the surface in order to create rich, organic textures. While that layer was still wet, I used a paint scraper to remove the paint from a small rectangular "window". After this underpainting dried thoroughly, I painted the window white, the edges of the board black, and the balance of the picture area is a palette knife painting of hot greens and yellows and summer-sky-blue. Finally, I used my smallest detail brushes to add the accent lines and the words and to paint the "mature" tree in a simple landscape scene. Adulthood was painted on a 6" x 6" wooden board created specifically for use by artists. There is a recessed slot in the back allowing you to hang it flush with the wall. The image and textures continue around the sides of the board. This piece would look wonderful displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a small, decorative table-top easel. ***NOTE: I can include a new black, wooden, mission-style display easel with your order for just $10.00. Please email me and let me know if you would like one.
