This peaceful moment is a uniquely soft, sweet painting.  A dream.  It continues my interest in the subtle inclusion of language in art.  There is a single phrase painted in tiny letters in the lower right corner which reads, "Teach yourself to enjoy the calm."  This piece is a reminder for those of us who sometimes seek out dramatic weather that there is beauty in the calm as well.  I think learning to appreciate the mundane elements of life, the quiet days, is a large part of maturity.  In the past, I always sought drama.  As I age, I am learning to find great satisfaction and lasting joy in the quiet times.

Gouache is like watercolor, only it is opaque rather than transparent. I use this media in much the same manner that I use acrylics. The difference is that these colors can be blended with water and are capable of much softer, more gradual transitions. Like the subtle fade in the sky that you see in this piece. That is a beautiful affect that would be very difficult to capture with regular acrylic paints.

Cooling was  painted on a 7" x 9" piece of acid-free white 140lb watercolor paper.  To frame it inexpensively, simply pick out a suitable 11" x 17" or 16" x 20" frame and bring the art and frame together to a custom framing shop.  Ask them to mat the art to fit the frame.
