I have been admiring this Samoyed dog in my neighborhood for years now.  She always appears very aloof and aristocratic.  Even her barks sound regal.  Fancy "woofs".  But I recently had the chance to get to know her up close and personal and she let on the she is really a big softy inside.  I think she is secretly a drama queen.  So I cast her here in the role of Cupid and I think it shows her true colors.  She is such a beautiful dog.

This piece has incredibly vibrant hues; a wide-open, sunny composition filled with floating flowers; and the joyous animated expression of one happy dog.  It is a unique painting featuring fine, fine detail work that is sure to brighten any home or office with a bit of hopeful canine magic.  This is a very special painting and I hope it finds a special home with another big-hearted dog fan.

Cupid took a long time to create.  I built this piece up over layers.  First, I sketched it in with a fine detail brush, using blue and red paint to lay down the lines.  Then I roughed in the underpainting with wide soft brushes.  The background began as a warm ochre and the dog was shades of peach and pink and soft yellows.  Eventually as the dog took form, I used black paint and the detail brush to set some of the key lines which remain visible.  Then I took a big soft brush and painted several layers of warm blue fading to purpley-blue across the whole sky, allowing the blue to run over into the dog.  I knew I could not get an even sky tone if I was making small brush strokes around different objects.  When the blue had dried, I used black lines to define every aspect of the piece.  And then I painted and painted and painted.  I am an exacting perfectionist on these detailed pieces, so I worked on this one over the course of two weeks to be sure every exciting, surprising spot of color was in just the right place.  This painting was a thrill to create and it makes me smile every time I see it.

Cupid was painted on an 8" x 10" gallery-wrapped canvas.  The image continues around the staple-free sides, allowing you to hang this painting unframed.  Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass.  This piece also looks great displayed on a small decorative easel.
