Oooh is this piece exciting.
Dig has all sorts of interesting things happening. Gorgeous
layers of organic textures, transparent washes, intriguing abrasions
and subtle lines. Plus that glowing symbolic heart and a
single phrase painted in very small camouflaged letters which reads,
"Dig deeper." This is one of my richest, most earthy abstracts
to date. It tells all sorts of stories and my hope is that
this unique piece will bring you a bit of natural inspiration to
keep trying, keep seeking, keep believing. Dig evolved over many days and through many layers. I used a wide variety of materials and techniques to create the ageless feeling of something that is both ancient and modern at the same time. After priming the canvas with black acrylic gesso, I applied a thin layer of acrylic modeling paste with a palette knife. I pulled the knife carefully across the surface to create subtle swells and small ridges. Then I used an ice-scraper to remove the texture from a small window. Once that layer dried, I painted a bold expressionist image filled with bright, bright reds and oranges and pinks. Once that dried, I used a soft cloth to rub several transparent layers of browns and burgundies and bits of black across the whole piece. Next, I used my fingers to rub in faint lines of red and orange. And I used brushes to paint in thin lines of blue and black. I rubbed more thin washes across it all and then while the last layer of washed was still wet, I dripped water on the surface and blotted up the drops with a dry cloth. At some point in there, I used a dental tool to engrave lines around the window. And I finished the piece with a few final washes that pulled it together before using tiny detail brushes to paint the window scene and to add the words. Peace was created on beautiful gallery-wrapped canvas with .75" deep, staple free sides. Because the image continues around the sides, this piece looks striking when displayed unframed. Either directly on the wall or on a small display easel.
