Dusk
Completed in 2003
Crayola crayon on acid-free Bristol board
3.75" x 4.5"

(Detail)
This little crayon drawing was completed in the car during the 4.5 hour drive from Grand Rapids, MN to our home in St. Paul, MN. I did not bring all my art supplies with me on this trip. All I had was a box of 48 crayons and a pad of Bristol board. So this rectangle was marked off free-hand in a moving car! I think I did pretty good for just eyeballing it. I usually tape off nice clean rectangles and keep the borders crisp and clear on my drawings, but I had no tape, so there are slight flecks of crayon and small marks in the border of this piece, outside of the picture area. These will not show once the artwork is matted. I consider this drawing something of a visual journal entry. That is why I signed and titled it in pencil along with a notation about the place and the date, I have never worked quite like this before, Dusk is a unique piece for me. I hope to do more, though. I think the style is quite endearing. And this colorful drawing would look lovely matted in a neutral mat and framed in a simple wood frame.
