Experience is such a delight.  I love this simple, smarty-pants painting.  My childhood was spent in a home where a great deal of emphasis was placed on intelligence and knowledge.  As I grew, I came to believe that wisdom was far more important than knowledge.  Now, as a world-weary adult, I believe that knowledge, wisdom, and intelligence have little to do with anything important in life.  Now days it seems to me that every valuable moment I can remember began with feeling.  With love.  With the experience of being kind or vulnerable or generous or just plain being good.  The experience of being alive.  No amount of wisdom or knowledge can take the place of experience.  And I cannot imagine laying on my death bed saying, "If only I had learned more.  If only I had more knowledge."  BA!  No, I think it all comes down to feeling everything, living everything, believing everything.  Experience.

I would like for this unusual little image to bring a bit of comfort and perspective to some fellow recovering-intellectual out there.

Experience was created in layers.  First, I primed the board with black acrylic gesso.  Then I used a palette knife to apply a thin layer of modeling paste which I proceeded to smear and softly abrade.  I used a dental tool to "etch" in a small window.  And once that dried, I used soft brushes to blend layers of soft blues and purples and pinks and teensy bits of magenta and cerulean.  Finally, I used detail brushes to create the apprehensive owl and to add highlights along with the words and my signature.  At some point in there, I also used a damp cloth to rub through layers of paint and an ice scraper to scratch things up a bit.

This piece was painted on a wooden board created specifically for use by artists. It has a recessed slot in the back allowing you to hang it flush with the wall. The sides of the board have been painted as well so that this piece would look wonderful displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a small, decorative table-top easel. ***NOTE: I can include a new black, wood, mission-style display easel with your order for just $10.00. Please email me and let me know if you would like one.

Wisdom is almost never the point.
