The words read:  Hearts and arrows only function properly when you let go.  Let go.

(Detail)

This painting feels good.  The open composition, the delicious blues, the bold arrow that seems so focused, and the message of release and acceptance.  Flying Free is a fun symbolic image of faith designed to spice up the home of some fellow recovering-control-freak out there.

How it was created.....   This gorgeous piece evolved slowly.  First, the board was primed with black acrylic gesso and then coated with a very thin layer of modeling paste.  I used a dental tool to scrape out the shape of the arrow and to "engrave" the label and some of the vertical lines on the left.  Then I layered all sorts of soft, deep blue shades.  I used smaller brushes to add the colorful lines.  And finally I used tiny detail brushes to add some unexpected spikes of color, some key highlights, the fine black lines, and the words.  This painting is nicely textured and has a luminous glow to it.

(The image continues around the sides allowing you to display your new painting unframed.  This is a digital photo.  The scans above are more accurate.)

Flying Free was painted on a wooden board created specifically for use by artists. It has a recessed slot in the back allowing you to hang it flush with the wall. The sides of the board have been painted as well so that this piece would look wonderful displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a small, decorative table-top easel. ***NOTE: I can include a new black, wood, mission-style display easel with your order for just $10.00. Please email me and let me know if you would like one.
