Growing Up is Hard

This thoughtful painting was created in layers.  Many layers.  There are layers of color, layers of texture, and layers of language.  The end result is a rich captivating "story" about the truths we learn growing up and the hazy way in which we must unlearn, adapt, etc. those truths as we grow.  There are many phrases appearing in this piece.  They are painted in all directions and in the final piece, they appear with varying degrees of legibility.  The focal phrase, the one painted on top of the image, is a sentence that reads, "My heart is the only truth I follow today."  For me, learning to follow my heart has been an ongoing challenge that has required me to shed the skin of my youth.
