Medicine is one of my all-time favorite pieces.  I rarely feel that strongly about a new piece.  It usually takes a while for paintings to grow on me a bit.  But I am just captivated by this one.  I love the colors, the puppy, the words, everything.  It just makes me feel great.  Something in me says I should not write things like this because people might think I am arrogant, but I hope by now you know that I take no credit for my images.  They do not come from me, they come through me.  I am as surprised by the image that appears when I sit down to paint as any other viewer would be.  And in this case, I was practically giddy.  Medicine is filled with gorgeous, unusual, vibrant colors.  It also features a glimpse of an innocent, plump, sleeping puppy.  And a single phrase painted in small letters in the lower right which reads, "Sleeping helpless critters are powerful medicine."

No matter how much I screw up, no matter how painful my day has been, no matter how hopeless I feel - my pets are always able to heal me.  I can think of no better or faster remedy for all that ails me than to watch one of my sweet friends sleeping peacefully at my feet.

Medicine was created in layers.  First, I primed the square canvas with black acrylic gesso.  Next, I applied paint directly from the tubes to the canvas and blended them with my palette knife.  While that layer was still wet, I used a paint scraper to clear the color and texture from a small rectangular "window".  Once the painting had dried, I used a soft cloth to lightly rub a small amount of pale blue/purple around the sides of the painting and allowed just a bit to edge onto the picture plain, too.  Finally, I used tiny detail brushes to paint the pup and the words.  The puppy was also built up over several layers to give him that luminous glow.

Medicine was painted on an 8" x 8" stretched canvas.  The image continues around the staple-free sides, allowing you to hang this painting unframed.  Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass.
