Rare

The words in this piece read: "I am a rare species and I feel protective legislation might be in order."

I love this painting. It makes me laugh every time I see it. Both the bear and the words make me happy. And the expressionist part of the painting is so deeply colored and naturally textured, it is really satisfying. Rare is an unusual, utterly unique image that celebrates being different. It captures both the difficulty of being one-of-a-kind and the joy of being special. This piece continues my interest in the subtle inclusion of language in art with a single sentence painted in very small letters across the bottom. The words read, "I am a rare species and I feel protective legislation might be in order."

I would like for this fabulous playful painting to brighten the home or office of some fellow happy rarity out there.

Rare was created in layers on a wood panel. I began with black acrylic gesso and a very thin layer of acrylic modeling paste. I scuffed up the paste to create some natural, weathered feeling textures. Then I used a small scraper to clear the area that would become the bear's window. I used wide soft brushes to paint a loose, expressionist painting filled with bold colors and active brush strokes. Then I applied many thin washes of transparent deep, deep turquoise and forest green and midnight blue to smooth everything together. Then I used tiny detail brushes to paint the beautiful charming panda and to add highlights and lowlights and the words. The image and texture continue around the sides of the board.

This piece was painted on a wooden board created specifically for use by artists. It has a recessed slot in the back allowing you to hang it flush with the wall. The sides of the board have been painted as well so that this piece would look wonderful displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a small, decorative table-top easel. ***NOTE: I can include a new black, wood, mission-style display easel with your order for just $10.00.
