Mmmm.... this is a scrumptious painting. Filled with satisfying powerful color and important symbols. In addition to the bold, engaging heart, this piece features three key words. "Listen", "Give", and "Embrace". Most of the lines in this piece are actually carved in the surface giving it some unusual textures, too. It is a lovely little treasure that is sure to brighten any room. I am hopeful that Relating will inspire a fellow student of love to keep practicing the challenging actions of listening to, giving to, and fully embracing another. How Relating was created..... This gorgeous rich painting was built up over several days. It began with a layer of black gesso primer. Then a thin layer of modeling paste. I used a dental pick to "engrave" the shape of the heart and the three "labels" in the modeling paste while it was still soft. Once that work had dried, I put down several soft washes of transparent color and used a textured cloth to blot through the layers. The tiny circles you see are from that cloth. I built up increasingly dense layers of warm buttery yellow and passionate red mixing in small bits of lemon and orange and pink and scarlet. And I used very small detail brushes to add the engaging lines and to go over the "engraved" words. I finished the piece with key highlights and secrets tidbits of color tucked into the nooks and crannies.
(The image continues around the sides allowing you to display your new painting unframed. This is a digital photo. The scans above are more accurate.) This piece was painted on a wooden board created specifically for use by artists. It has a recessed slot in the back allowing you to hang it flush with the wall. The sides of the board have been painted as well so that this piece would look wonderful displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a small, decorative table-top easel.
