This painting is really compelling in person.  The colors are so unusual and the composition is also unexpected.  Road Trip is one in a series of paintings I have been developing lately that refer back to childhood memories.  My family took an annual road trip to Florida which I remember mainly as a blur of foreign places whizzing by my car window.  Occasionally, though, we would come around a curve or enter a valley and I would glimpse the wide open empty landscapes that eventually shaped my personal idea of Heaven.  This gorgeous, bold, expressionist painting is sure to spice up the home or office of some fellow traveler out there.

First, I primed the canvas with black acrylic gesso, then I applied paint directly from tubes to the canvas.  I chose a variety of earthy, spicy colors and set them off with a bit of warm, iridescent gold.  I used palette knives to blend colors and and add textures.  Then I used an ice-scraper to remove the paint from two rectangular areas that would become the "windows".  Once this thick layer dried, I went in with tiny detail brushes to paint the serene landscapes that anchor this piece.

This piece was painted on an unusual 8" x 16" stretched canvas.  The sides of this piece have been painted black allowing you to display it without framing.  If you do choose to frame Road Trip, you can do so affordably as it will not require matting or glass.
