Gouache on acid-free 140lb watercolor paper

(Detail)
This lone tree is beautiful and hopeful and sad and wanting all at once. It is in between emotions, in between days. And it is filled with gorgeous, subtle hues that slide seamlessly from one to the other.
Gouache is like watercolor, only it is opaque rather than transparent. I use this media in much the same manner that I use acrylics. The difference is that these colors can be blended with water and are capable of much softer, more gradual transitions. Like the subtle fade in the sky that you see in this piece. That is a beautiful affect that would be very difficult to capture with regular acrylic paints.
