This is a haunting landscape. In a good way. I like to look at it. You can feel something big happening. The moon is very powerful in this painting. It shimmers. And it cast some lovely highlights on the naked little tree. This painting continues my interest in the subtle inclusion of language in art with a single phrase painted in tiny black letter in the lower right. They read, "Wake up." I am hopeful this unusual nightscape will bring important creative dreams your way. Will spark a reawakening, maybe. Will remind you each day to wake up. How That Moment was created..... This canvas was first primed with black gesso and then I used my fingers to push modeling paste into gorgeous irregular natural lines. I created the moon and the lone tree and the horizon line this way. They are raised from the surface of the canvas. Once this layer dried, I painted the ground area in deep purples and the sky in deep blues. Next, I used wide soft brushes to layer warm greens in the night sky and red brown and ochre on the land. And finally, I used tiny detail brushes to paint the textured tree and the glowing moon and stars. And also to add the words.
(The painting continues around the sides. This is a digital photo. The scans above are more accurate.) This piece was painted on a deep gallery-wrapped stretched canvas with 1.5" staple free sides. The image and textures continue around the sides so this piece looks beautiful and professional when displayed unframed.
