This piece is so much nicer in person.  It is a beautiful little painting.  Unfortunately, I was unable to capture the unusual colors of this painting with my scanner and camera.  Cobalt is a pigment used in the best deepest shades of blue and teal.  Because of the chemical make-up of cobalt, these shades of blue and teal do not reproduce well via digital means.  And Through is FILLED with gorgeous shades of deep cobalt blue and teal and green.  The transitions from cool blue to warm blue to green are much more subtle in the real painting.  In these images the green appears to float on top of the blue in an unnatural way.  I apologize for the less than perfect images you see here.  But I am certain that if this piece speaks to you and you make the decision to adopt Through, you will be very pleasantly surprised by the vibrant hues that make this piece special.

I really enjoy this painting.  I especially like the break in the three-dimensional boundary that separates below from above.  And I love the little arrow reaching.  Obviously this is a painting about triumph and courage and faith.  About making it through a difficult time.  The playful colors lighten the subject a little and I am hopeful that this will be a happy reminder to some fellow survivor out there of how far you have come and how strong you are.  A reminder that you are creative and, "You will find a way."

Through began with black gesso primer and then I used my fingers and some modeling paste to build the three-dimensional barrier that divides the upper part of the panel from the lower part.  Then I used a palette knife to apply modeling paste to the lower section in naturally rough irregular patterns.  Providing intriguing texture and a nice active area.  Next, I used brushes to paint deep purpley blue, again in a naturally irregular way, across the bottom of the piece and slowly built that layer to a warm turquoise blue further up.  I used magenta and pink to paint the upper part of the piece in soft washes and allowed for a transition are between the two sections.  Finally, I used small detail brushes to add key highlights and lowlights, the exciting arrow, and the words.
