Unpredictable

The words in this piece read: "Just because my heart is pure, that does not mean I have to be nice all the time. I am not always nice."

Unpredictable is a fabulous, fun, surprising painting sure to bring smiles to any home or office. It is unique. This painting is one of the latest additions to a long series of heart images that I have been working on for months. Most of them are deliberately inspirational. Unpredictable is deliberately real. This painting continues my interest in the subtle inclusion of language in art. There are a pair of sentences painted in two separate places on the canvas. Across the bottom, in very small letters that are well camouflaged with the background is the phrase, "Just because my heart is pure, that does not mean I have to be nice all the time." And along the right side in a soft baby blue are the words, "I am not always nice."

There is a comforting balance to this painting.

Unpredictable is the result of many different processes and applications. Layers were painted on and rubbed off and scratched into and blotted and scraped. I did all sorts of things to create interesting textures and a feeling of timeless depth. There are transparent washes and opaque highlights and broad strokes and fine details. It is a gorgeous painting filled with subtle movement and pleasing contradictions.
