This painting is so hopeful and
uplifting. In person, it just shines with possibility. I coated the
whole piece in several layers of gloss varnish when it was done to
add greater depth to the colors and to give it something of a
shimmering-mirage feel. This painting features deep hues with subtle
color shifts from warm blue-greens to cool purples. There are fine
natural ridges that divide the space. And in the upper right corner,
it contains my favorite dove to date. I have been creating doves and
using dove symbols in my work for years now. They represent hope.
But this is the first dove I have painted that has a real strong
personality of his own. He moves beyond symbolic hope. He is a
character in his own right. And he reminds me a bit of Dr. Seuss.
This is a strong painting with strong contrast and a bold
exclamation of miraculous dreams.
I am hopeful that this unusual painting will offer some fellow dreamer out there a window onto something more. A meditative focal point from which to imagine a brighter future. When I Dream began as a raw wood panel coated in black acrylic gesso. Next, I used a palette knife and my fingers to apply a thin bead of acrylic modeling past. I formed naturally irregular ridges that broke the space into several compartments. Like stages in a life. Once that layer dried, I used wide soft brushes to smoothly blend all shades or warm and cool blues. And finally, I used my smallest detail brushes to paint the very unique dove and the accent lines.
