What a beautiful night! And such a quiet secluded arena from which to view the stars. I really enjoyed creating this one. The colors and the textures were really satisfying to work with. It feels like an old story of wishing and dreams. This special tree perched on a private peak.
Wonderment was created in layers. First, the canvas was primed with black acrylic gesso. Next, I used my fingers to push acrylic modeling paste into lovely, naturally irregular ridges that formed a three-dimensional drawing. When that dried, I used wide soft brushes to lay down an expressionist underpainting filled with reds and burgundies and rich purples. I used small brushes to add the middle layers of ochre and brown on the ridges and brilliant blue around the tree fading to a deep navy sky. And finally I used tiny detail brushes to add highlights and lowlights, to paint the tree and the stars, and to add the words.
