A New Perspective is a fabulous inspirational piece and a great way
to start the new year. This brave little tree has pulled up
her roots and taken to the skies in search of a better view.
The tree and the ground are raised from the surface of the wood -
they were created with artist-grade ceramic stucco. And the
colors in this piece just glow with warm adventurous spring light.
There are words painted along the horizon line in small, very pale,
camouflaged blue that read, "I need a new perspective." Each year about this time, I get ants in my pants and want to move or run away or make some big change. I want to LIVE more and follow routines less. I want to take to the skies with this curious tree. I am hopeful this image of adventure and freedom will bring comfort and inspiration to some fellow traveler out there. How A New Perspective was created..... After priming this board with black acrylic gesso, I used a palette knife to spread fine, artist-grade ceramic stucco across the bottom of the panel where the land would be. I removed all stucco from a small irregular area that would become the hole left behind when the tree uprooted and took to the sky. Then I used a palette knife and an exacto blade and my fingers to apply stucco in the form of a floating tree. It is difficult to get clean edges with stucco, so I used the razor blade to scrape away all unwanted texture and make the edges crisp. Once that layer dried, I used wide soft brushes to create the beautiful slow fade in the sky. The blues in the sky are just yummy. And then I used a variety of brushes to paint the textured land and the tree. Finally, I used tiny detail brushes to add key highlights and the words. **PLEASE NOTE** This piece is currently unvarnished and I will leave it this way unless your request varnish. If you plan to display this piece in a manner where it might be handled by viewers, please let me know that and I will apply two coats of acrylic varnish at no charge. The surface of this one is relatively fragile and should be protected if it will be handled at all.
(The sides of the wood panel have been painted a warm brown shade to match the brown of the tree bark. This is a digital photo. The scans above are more accurate.) A New Perspective was painted on a wooden board created specifically for use by artists. It has a recessed slot in the back allowing you to hang it flush with the wall. The sides of the board have been painted as well so that this piece would look wonderful displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a small, decorative table-top easel.
