This exquisite very special painting is my first collaborative piece created with another artist.  I had the privilege of working with Bella Abati - a New England artist whose work has always inspired and delighted me - on this lovely lovely abstract.  Bella created much of this painting in 2004 and then shipped the canvas to me.  I was terrified to touch it and put off working on this project for far too long.  It is very scary to risk defacing someone else's work!  But I am so very glad I finally found the courage to take this on.

What a fabulous experience I had.  I learned so much.  First, I was very uncomfortable working with a scale and a palette that were foreign to me.  But uncomfortable is a good thing!  Second, as soon as I started painting I became acutely aware of what kind of person I am versus what kind of person Bella is.  Her work is so lean and precise and confident!  Bella does not muck about.  I wanted to repaint and repaint and repaint and add layer upon layer of color as that murkiness, that complexity, is my nature as a woman and an artist.  But I stopped myself.  I aimed at a clearer vision.  Some neutral common ground that I might share with Bella.  It made me nervous.  I felt naked.

The end result is an astonishingly bold painting that is sharper and stronger than my pieces usually are and maybe a little more squishy and sensitive and sweet than Bella's original painting was.  This unique piece is a treat to behold and being so large and so strong, it will add a defining presence to any room.

Bella signed this piece on what is now the top edge (she originally envisioned the painting hanging with the light blue area at the top) and I have signed it on the bottom.  We have both signed on the back.

We will be splitting the proceeds from this canvas.

(NOTE:  I have had this piece on display in our home since it was completed and it is such a lovely treasure!  I am always happy to see this painting and I cannot say that about very many pieces.  This is a special canvas.)

You have always been my destiny.

SPECIAL NOTE:  This site is gigantic.  And it evolved over the course of ten years and 2,000 paintings.  So far as I know, this is the largest single-artist portfolio website on the internet.  Very exciting, but I am a technological boob and I maintain this site all by myself.  That means there are glitches here and there.  Some pages are outdated.  Some formatting looks out of whack on different browsers.  You get the idea.  I apologize if you run into problems.  PLEASE email me and tell me about 'em so I can fix them.  Thank you!  Love to you, Melissa
