This is one of my favorite paintings of the year so far. The abstract expressionist background is vivid and richly hued and full of surprises including areas of abrasion and transparent layering. This is all about color and emotion. Once all of the expressive abstract layers dried, I used a tiny detail brush to carefully pull that beautiful baby bird from the existing shapes and lines. This is a great example of my interest in layering conscious imagery over intuitive painting. I look at the abstract expressionist work and I find images in the existing paint as one my see images in a Rorschach ink blot. In this case, I saw that beak first. Then I saw the little wing. Then the feet. It all came together with those wonderful words. Who doesn't have a vulnerable frustrated baby bird like this inside them somewhere? How this painting was created..... I used brushes and palette knives to create this lush layered piece. This piece was created on a gallery stretched canvas primed with black acrylic gesso. The image continues around the staple-free sides. This painting may be displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a decorative display easel. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it required no matting or glass. |
