This elegant little box can be displayed as a simple painting.  Or it can be used as a box.  In particular, I like the idea of using this piece as a prayer box.  Where you write your dreams and prayers and wishes on slips of paper and place them in this box for safe keeping.

How Box of Light was created.....   After the black gesso dried, I used a soft cloth to rub on the first few layers of bright warm deep color.  Then I used wide soft brushes to apply washes of warm white on top of the brighter hues.  I used a palette knife to apply a few thick layers of warm white in the area that would eventually hold the image.  And I used a dental tool to engrave the work, "Faith" in each and every layer.  Finally, I used tiny 18/0 spotter brushes to paint the beautiful scene and to add my signature and the date.

(All sides of this box are painted.  The inside and bottom are unfinished.  This painting is signed and date on the top and it is signed, dated and titled on the bottom.  These are digital photos and they do a poor job of capturing the delicate colors of this piece.  The scans above are more accurate.)

Box of Light was painted on an unfinished wooden box - I believe the wood is pine.  The lid lifts straight off, there are no hinges.  This box fits together tightly but it is not airtight and the interior is unsealed so you would not want to fill it with anything perishable.  You can display this piece flat on a desk or dresser, but it also is quite stable sitting on edge and displayed like a painting on a shelf.  I would really prefer to sell this piece unfinished.  I like the idea of the paint wearing down naturally over the years as the box gets handled.  However, if you would like me to apply a few coats of clear varnish to all painted sides in order to protect the paint, I will happily do so.
