Christmas Eve is a sweet, soft image of serenity. Two trees
stand together in a gentle snowfall at twilight. The snow
muffles all sound and with the exception of the snowflakes falling
slowly, everything is still. Not waiting. Not wanting.
Just witnessing the weather and enjoying the moment. This
painting continues my interest in the subtle inclusion of language
in art with a single word painted in tiny black letters that reads,
"peace....". I am hopeful this meditative reminder to slow down and feel the spirit of Christmas will bring a bit of natural peace to your home year-round. How Christmas Eve was created..... This thin masonite panel was already coated with a dark, archival, clay-based substrate by the manufacturer. It was created specifically for use by artists. I primed it yet again with black acrylic gesso. When that layer dried, I began building up transparent layers of blue, gray, cream, and white. Mostly I used wide soft brushes for gentle transitions. Once the layers had built up to a soft but solid feel, I used tiny detail brushes to paint the black lines that define the scene. With these same brushes, I painted the trees and the brightest white highlights on the snowy land. Then I carefully painted the brightest white snowflakes seen evenly distributed across the scene. The rest of the snowflakes were added by dipping my wide brush in thinned white, blue, gray, and navy paint and then softly and carefully running my finger over the bristles to "flick" droplets of paint. Some of these droplets were then blotted up to add a bit of depth by having flakes that were more and less defined. Finally I added the word "peace..." and my signature and the date.
(The sides have been painted black. This plastic stand can be included in your order for free if you request it. These are digital photos. The scans above are more accurate.) Christmas Eve was painted on a thin masonite rectangle coated with an archival clay-based ground and then primed with black gesso. The edges have been painted black and this piece looks lovely displayed unframed on a small clear plastic stand. I will include one of these stands for free if you request it at the time of payment. Otherwise, Christmas Eve can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no glass or matting. Or it can be shown on a small decorative easel if you prefer.
