This is the most powerful painting I have completed in a very long
time. It is rich and layered like an old parable about nature
and love. With deep glowing colors and clean clear lines.
This piece is both accessible and mysterious at the same time.
I was thrilled to watch it develop and I am moved each time I see
it. Feathers are a symbol of great importance to me personally. They represent freedom and the sky and hope. This piece has one thought broken into three phrases painted in small letter near the bottom. Those words read, "We are each of us born of the light ... created for flight ... and blessed with the power of love." I would like for this striking piece to bring warmth and magic and vivid dreams to your home. How Creation came to be..... After the black gesso primer dried, I used palette knives to apply layers of fine artist's stucco and acrylic medium mixed with natural sand. That textured underpainting gives this piece a wonderful organic feel. I cleared those textures from the "window" that would eventually hold the feather. Next, I used palette knives to paint the entire canvas a bright warm shade of orange. Once that dried, I used wide soft brushes and a dry cotton cloth to apply and blot up several layers of golden yellow and brownish/ochre. Then I used my knife to apply the rich brown you see along the right side of the painting. And around the window. Finally, I used detail brushes to paint the elegant symbolic feather and the words and the lines. I added the lush bits of teal last and I was afraid to put that brush loaded with such a bold color down on the canvas. Because at that point, everything was earthy. Teal was a scary gutsy move, but I think it electrifies the entire painting. There are very small traces of a cool pastel purple/blue shade that appear as highlights on the feather and they bring a lot of depth to the image, too.
(The deep 1.5" staple-free sides have been painted black. The scans above and below are more accurate.) Creation was painted on a large, fine, hand-stretched canvas. A fellow in Arizona makes these just for professional artists. It is incredibly sturdy, built on hefty kiln-dried wood that will keep your painting in proper shape for generations. The 1.5" deep staple-free sides of the canvas have been painted black providing a striking profile and allowing you to display your new painting unframed if you like.
