I always seem to gravitate towards damaged goods. My dogs are all rescued mutts, my family members are all oddball messes, my partners have always been troubled and recovering from stuff. I understand folks who know they are flawed. And animals that have been rescued from unpleasantness are the most loyal friends in the world. Because damaged hearts love stronger than hearts that have known little struggle. The heart in this painting was gouged out a bit with a dental tool to give it that fabulous weathered feel. The unusual hues in this piece are really lovely in person. And the rich organic textures make it feel both thoroughly modern and timeless and warn all at once. I am hopeful this painting will help some fellow damaged heart out there to appreciate their battle scars. How Damaged was created..... After the black acrylic primer dried, I applied several different texturing products all around the sides of the canvas and then scratched those areas all up with a dental tool and a screwdriver. I used a different technique to apply a rough texture to the central "window" area. And then I scratched a few lines around that window as well. Once all of the texturing stuff dried, I used a variety of brushes and a soft cotton cloth to apply many layers of color.
(The sides are textured and painted so you can display your new artwork unframed if you like. This is a digital photo. The detailed scans shown above are more accurate.) Damaged was painted on a 6" x 6" stretched canvas. The sides of this piece DO have staples but they are covered by layers of texture and color and they do not show at all. This painting looks lovely displayed as it is without framing either directly on the wall or on a small decorative easel or stand. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass. |

Damaged hearts love stronger.
