I love to paint a lone tree on the horizon and have done so many many times over the years, but this time I added some contrast and perspective.  This tree came from somewhere.  From a gathering of trees.  But now she is solo.  And below her in the sky are the words, "How did I get here?"  Did a bird carry a seed across that chasm?  Why is it that some apples do fall far from the tree and other folks grow up just like their parents?  Do we have any control over where we eventually grow?

This is a beautiful landscape that is more impressive in person.  The transitions in the sky are more subtle than my scanner could capture.  And the whole painting exudes warmth.  It feels like fresh air.

How Distance was created...  After the black gesso primer dried, I applied fine artist grade stucco to the areas that would become the cliffs.  So the cliffs are actually raised a wee bit from the surface of the canvas.  Once that layer dried, I used wide soft brushes to apply many many layers of blue across the sky.  And to paint the cliffs with layers of earth toned hues.  Finally, I finished this painting with tiny 18/0 detail brushes, adding the lively trees and the words and a few important highlights.

(The image continues around the staple-free sides so you can display your new artwork unframed.  This is a digital photo, the scans above are more accurate.)

Distance was painted on a gallery-wrapped canvas with .75" staple-free sides.  This piece would look wonderful displayed unframed directly on the wall.  Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it required no matting or glass.
