Fierce

I just love this little piece. This is Johnny the puppy. (Johnny is a girl.) She is a mix of Pomeranian and American Eskimo. She belongs to a peer of mine, another artist, Rob Kelly. There is a nice contrast in the piece between the rough expressionist background and the finally detailed pup. I think that echoes the contrast I have experience myself in little dogs like Johnny. They have fine bones and pretty fur and HUGE personalities and a wild fire inside. Johnny is ready to take on the world!

How Fierce was created... After the black acrylic gesso primer dried, I used palette knives to create the energetic background painting. Then I used traditional brushes to layer hues on top of that underpainting. I finished the piece by painting little Johnny and the words with an 18/0 spotter brush.

Fierce was painted on a gallery-wrapped canvas with .75" staple-free sides. This piece would look wonderful displayed unframed directly on the wall or sitting on a small display stand. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it required no matting or glass.
