Oil pastel on white acid-free mat board

Doesn't this drawing feel good?  Like your first breathe of fresh air after you step outside of a yucky office building?  It is so calming and peaceful.  That one glorious flower soaking up the sun.  And those delicate animated clouds.  This piece was an arduous journey for me.  It took a tremendous amount of work to pull it together.  But that makes it all the more satisfying to view now that it is fully alive.

I am hoping this gentle image of warmth and beauty will bring a lively spark of color to your home or office.

How Growing was created.....   Oil pastels are a bit tricky to work with.  Some colors cover others, some remove the layer below them, and some mix with the colors below.  So it takes lots of experience to learn the ins and outs of layering oil pastel colors.  As I often do, I laid down a VERY bright underpainting.  The sky was brilliant purple and the land was filled with golds and oranges and reds.  Then I used a straight-edged razor blade to strip that off, leaving behind colorful stains on the mat board.  (Just the process of applying and removing the "underpainting" on this piece took me nearly four hours!  Eek!)  Next, I built up layers and layers and layers of lighter colors.  Finally, I scratched the lighter colors off a few key areas and applied pure vibrant color directly on those hotspots.

Growing was completed on a white acid-free mat board.  You will want to frame this piece to protect your investment.  One affordable way to frame this unique drawing would be to purchase a standard-sized frame at your local home store and then bring the frame and the drawing together to a custom-framer.  Ask the framer to mat the drawing to fit the frame.
