This painting looks deceptively simple at first glance. When you step closer, you see a rich variety of textures and layered hues. Colors peaking out from beneath other colors. Ridges and planes and so much organic "action". This is one of those pieces that draws you back and it is satisfying each viewing. Plus there are those sweet little hearts. And the words describing a truth so many of us struggle to refute. The words read: "Love is always a guess." We want to believe in fairy tale love. Preordained love. Love that we just "fall" into and never fall out of. Love that is effortless forever. But I do not know any couples who have that love. Real love is work. And real love includes doubts. Is he really the one? Will she ever understand me? Why are we together? All we can do is to guess at those answers and do the work necessary to sustain a loving relationship. Practice being committed. Practice being good partners. How Guesswork was created..... Oh boy. This piece has so much going on. I do not really recall the exact order in which various applications occurred because I worked on this over the course of several weeks. But I know this piece has modeling paste that I "engraved" with a screw driver. I cleared the texture from that central "window" where the hearts appear. Then much of the painting was done with palette knives. Accent lines and the detailed hearts and words were painted with tiny 18/0 detail brushes. Guesswork was painted on a rigid canvas panel. The edges of the panel have been painted, so this piece looks lovely displayed just as it is on a small stand or decorative easel. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no glass or matting.
