I N T R O D U C T I O N |

On April 29th, 1999, I registered FlyingGirl.com as a domain name. I published a single page with a few samples of my art. I had only recently made the decision to leave corporate business and follow my heart. My portfolio contained maybe a dozen pieces. From there, this site grew to more than 1,000 pages and became a storefront as well. My life has taken me in many directions, but FlyingGirl.com has remained a constant. Even during the times when I needed a break from art-making, I still maintained this online presence. Until recently, I ran this site as a business. I had heard for years that most artists do not make it because they do not understand business. I came from some years of business experience, so I thought I would have an edge that way. I followed all sorts of traditional marketing ideas. I approached all web updates and mailing list emails and auction descriptions as a business person. And you know what? I hated all the business aspects of my life just as much as I did when I worked a corporate job. Yuck. In early 2007, I went through some personal trials that changed the way I see this site and my role in the world. I no longer see this place as a business I must manage. I no longer see my mailing list as a resource or my auctions as billboards. I now see this site and my most wonderful customers and every word I publish to be an extension of me personally. This is now my personal site. I write personal notes to my mailing list. I tell personal stories in my descriptions and auctions. When you buy my art, you are buying a piece of my odd journey. You are helping me personally to continue with my creative calling. I am not a business. I am a woman. On a mission. Painting hope. And joy. And humor. And sorrow and fear and anger, too. Creating magic. Telling stories. Trying to connect us. Trying to understand. We do this work together. I accept your funding and your enthusiasm and your words of comfort and your friendship. And I return them to you as unique works of art filled with emotion and compassion and the possibility of more. Together we add color to the world. Together we gently remind ourselves that life can be challenging, but life can be miraculous, too. The work I do and the way that I live and the level of participation from you, my friends, would never have been possible at any other time in history. My story is unique to this internet age. I am so grateful to have friends and supporters around the globe and to know you, not just as customers. I owe so much to this catchy little domain name. Sixteen letters. www.FlyingGirl.com. That is me. Thank you to all who have visited here and dropped me a note or two. Thank you especially to those who have collected my work and supported me in my art career. I am thrilled to report that my art can be found in every US state, all Canadian provinces, many cities across Japan and Australia, and most every Western European country. I am so grateful for your interest. Thank you for giving me a chance to paint these pictures. Love, MAR
