Oil pastel on acid-free mat board

(Enlarged to show details.)

This is a pretty little abstract with delicate colors and helpful concepts.  Like a menu or a map that might lead to better days.  The words in the various "boxes" include:  Courage, kindness, creativity, joy, wisdom, fun, faith, imagination, vision, strength, work, growth and humor.

Oil pastel pieces often frame up beautifully and this one should be no exception.  I think Layout would look especially lovely with a wide white mat and a thin low-profile black frame.

How Layout was created.....   Oil pastels are a bit tricky to work with.  Some colors cover others, some remove the layer below them, and some mix with the colors below.  So it takes lots of experience to learn the ins and outs of layering oil pastel colors.  As I often do, I laid down a VERY bright underpainting.  Then I used a straight-edged razor blade to strip that off, leaving behind colorful stains on the mat board.  Next, I layered white atop that intricate under-painting.  And lastly, I scratched the white off in fine accent lines and used a dental tool to "etch" a single word in each of the colored boxes.

(The words in this image read in all directions.  And Layout was signed and dated in a manner that allows you to frame and hang this drawing in any direction you please.)

Layout was drawn on acid-free white mat board.  You will want to frame this lovely drawing to protect your investment.  One affordable means of framing is to purchase a standard-sized frame at your local home store and then bring the frame and the artwork together to a custom-framer.  Ask the framer to mat the art to fit the frame.
