Oil pastel on acid-free mat board

(Enlarged to show details. I used a dental tool to "engrave" the background VERY lightly with the words: Meow. Meow. Meow. These words can only be seen if you look very closely.)

Isn't this kitty fun? I love the rich smooth colors and those neat "engraved" lines. This is a happy drawing created in a bold folksy style. I hope it brings a playful bit of color to the home or office of some fellow cat-lover out there. How Meow was created..... Oil pastels are a bit tricky to work with. Some colors cover others, some remove the layer below them, and some mix with the colors below. So it takes lots of experience to learn the ins and outs of layering oil pastel colors. As I often do, I laid down a VERY bright underpainting. Then I used a straight-edged razor blade to strip that off, leaving behind colorful stains on the mat board. Next, I built up layers and layers and layers of lighter colors. Finally, I scratched the top colors off with a dental tool in order to create the lovely lines. Meow was drawn on acid-free white mat board. You will want to frame this lovely drawing to protect your investment. One affordable means of framing is to purchase a standard-sized frame at your local home store and then bring the frame and the artwork together to a custom-framer. Ask the framer to mat the art to fit the frame.
