Night

Completed in 1998

Colored Pencil on acid-free mat board

4.5" x 9.75"

Night is from a time of transition in my life.  I had quit my corporate job, but not yet found my way spiritually or artistically.  I was a couple of years into my artistic rebirth, but still insure of what that meant or where it would take me.  Most of my images were landscapes because I did at least recognize that nature could heal me.  And many had paths because I so desperately sought some direction.  This is one of the most peaceful creations from that era in my career.  It feels very quiet and serene to me.

Compared to my current works, Night seems a bit undeveloped.  Rudimentary.  But it clearly shows the origin of many themes that would develop throughout my career.  In the six years since I completed this piece, I have created nearly 500 works of art and so many of them contain paths, mountains, night skies, rolling hills, etc.  I have learned a lot about composition and color and line quality since 1998, but I really value this drawing as a glimpse into how this crazy journey all began.  I am hopeful it will bring a bit of serenity and faith to some fellow seeker out there in need of inspiration.

Each colored pencil piece always took me weeks to create back then.  I layered color many, many, many times over to get those rich vibrant hues.

Night is currently matted in a neutral mat and is shrink-wrapped.  It will be shipped that way.  I must explain, though, that back then I did not really understand how much my work would eventually define me.  I did not see it as a profession yet.  What that means is that I have no idea what the back of this drawing or the margins look like.  There could be a pizza delivery number on the back or notes about a job interview scribbled in the margins.  Or perhaps it will be neat and tidy as my pieces are today.  Only you will know.  It is signed and dated on the front.  Hopefully, it is also signed, dated, and titled on the back, but I do not know that either.  It does look lovely in the mat and will undoubtedly frame up beautifully.
