Porch

Completed in 1999

7" x 11"

Colored pencil

(Porch has a minor flaw.  You can see it clearly in this enlargement.  I am afraid I accidentally cut the surface with an exacto knife.  The cut does not go all the way through the mat board, but it is visible to the naked eye.  The cut measures about 2.5 inches.)

Porch is one of my earliest pieces.  It is also one of the largest colored pencil pieces I have ever completed.  This uniquely charming drawing is filled with soft warm summer light.  It captures a state of mind I am often pursuing.  Relaxed attention.  Quiet attention.  Stillness tinted with satisfaction.  Colored pencil is a very labor intensive media and not one that I have the time to use often these days.  Which is unfortunate, because there is a softness to pencil, a sweetness, that is hard to achieve with paint.

This tranquil landscape is sure to bring a bit of contemplative magic to any room.

Porch is the result of many, many layers of colored pencil.  It is being offered here unframed, but it would look lovely displayed in a neutral mat and a low-profile natural wood frame.

***IMPORTANT*** Please note that Porch has a small flaw.  The flaw is shown in detail above.
