This is a beautiful elegant piece with some nice expressionist elements and the clean open composition of a minimalist piece. But what makes it so special is that precious fragile flower and those unexpected words. Pretty Flower is an important piece to me personally. I have realized that as I age I depend more and more on my art as my primary means of communicating with the world. And this image is a clear example - both in my use of color and the way I apply paint, as well as in the content - of me sharing my own life through my art. To be a good artist, I must be vulnerable and sensitive and soft. But being those things leaves me open to all sorts of sadness and injury. I would much prefer to be a bear or an accountant or something more safe and stable. So my life is an ongoing challenge to accept and appreciate the gifts that I have and to be the best flower I can be. (But I might still pretend to be a bear when no one is looking. I like to growl.) How Pretty Flower was created... I used palette knives, paper towels and a variety of brushes to created this fun piece. Color was layered over the course of several days. I used a tiny detail brush to paint the accent lines, the fragile flower, and the words.
(The image continues around the deep staple-free sides so you can display your new artwork unframed. This is a digital photo. The scans above and below are more accurate.) Pretty Flower was painted on a large 11" x 14" professional quality gallery-wrapped canvas with deep 1.5" sides. This piece would look wonderful displayed unframed directly on the wall. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it required no matting or glass.
