MY REACTION: This is a rich, wild painting. Layered, textured, filled with bits of color. And those lovely eggs. I used dental tools to scratch in accent lines around those eggs. CONTENT: Hmmm... how to talk about this one? I am not sure how to capture what I see here. This is a very raw, emotional, expressive piece. Very open to interpretation. To me, it has to do with what lies locked inside each of us. The choices we have yet to make. Who has the courage to break that shell? How many of us pass on still protected in there? Never quite maturing. These eggs might be breakfast. They might hatch into chicks. They might rot as they are, turning into something useless but powerfully stinky. And if they do hatch, what will become of the chicks? ARTISTIC CONCERNS: My work is getting looser and more expressive as I age. I like that energy. This piece is possibly my gutsiest yet. Big and a little dark and very active. Intriguing. This is primarily a knife painting, but I used brushes, my fingers, and dental tools to create those eggs. NOTE: I left the staple free sides of this piece raw. They are primed with black gesso and have some paint smudges here and there. I left it this way because I like the effect and believe it would look lovely displayed this way unframed. However, the collector who purchases this piece could request that the sides be painted black. I would do that at no charge. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW: Raw Potential is on a deep gallery stretched canvas. The painting continues around the staple-free sides. It can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass. It could also be displayed on the wall as it is, unframed.
