In cold climates, there is a time before the snow falls when all living things are bundled up and waiting. The air is crisp. The light is thin and brittle. Colors are transparent. The leaves have all fallen and the plants have all withered and we all stand still waiting for a pretty blanket to change the land. There is a fragile elegance to this time. It always fills my heart with respect for Nature and her seasons. How Ready for Winter was created..... First, I sketched this piece with a fine-tipped black pen while a shivered on the shore of a vast blue lake. The ONLY colors that darken when it gets colder out are the colors of deep frigid water. The water gets darker and darker until it freezes over. Later, I used colored inks to fill this piece in and then I softened and blended and smoothed everything together using oil pastels. Ready for Winter was drawn on acid-free, heavy, white watercolor paper. You will want to frame this lovely drawing to protect your investment. One affordable means of framing is to purchase a standard-sized frame at your local home store and then bring the frame and the artwork together to a custom-framer. Ask the framer to mat the art to fit the frame.
