Rorschach #5

Completed in 2007

5" x 7"

Acrylic paint on a Belgian linen panel

The words read:  I do not like mushrooms, so I say it's a chef's hat.

(Enlarged to show detail.  The edges of the shape are raised ridges and this piece is visibly textured.)

ABOUT THIS PIECE:  I have begun a wonderful new series of abstract paintings that are loose and bold and experiential.  All about paint and color and emotion.  Less conscious than my usual work.  And like Rorschach ink blots, they hold limitless stories so each viewer can find their own path through.  Like clouds, too!

I am so surprised by the reaction I am getting to this series.  Folks love to tell me what they see in these.  It is almost as if people are hungry for a chance to find their own visions.  To see things that are not already pre-defined.  To see without being told what to see.  I am not sure if that make sense, but I am really enjoying these Rorschach pieces.  It is HARD for me to not impose my own visions on them, to allow them to remain undefined all the way to the end.  But I love it.

This is an especially happy piece.  I really like this shape.  I enjoyed creating it and I enjoy looking at it.

The words in this one read, "I do not like mushrooms, so I say it's a chef's hat."

Here are the other four pieces in the Rorschach series so far...

HOW IT WAS MADE:  This piece is almost entirely a finger-painting.  I had so much fun making it!  I love fingerpainting.  It is very free-ing.  And expressive.  And fun!  The only time I used brushes or tools of any kind in this one was to add the words and a few key highlights and lowlights.  The line that defines the shape is a 3-dimenssional ridge that I created by pushing paint along with my fingers.  Once that dried, I used my fingertips to apply and mix paint on the linen surface.  Then I applied the final spots of color - again with my fingers.  And I finished the piece by adding the words.

(The sides have been painted so you can display your new artwork unframed.  This is a digital photo, the scans above are more accurate.)

DISPLAY OPTIONS:  This piece could be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass.  Or it would also display nicely on a small decorative easel just as it is, no framing needed.  Or on a display stand  The image continues around the sides for a clean finished look.

I will include a small clear plastic display stand with this piece at no charge if you request it at the time of payment.

I do not like mushrooms,

so I say it's a chef's hat.
