I
love this painting! What fun. This is one of those odd
duck pieces that just fell right out of. It came out of
nowhere and was wholly unexpected. Those piece are always the
most fun to paint. This image has all sorts of exciting textures happening as well as layer after layer of colors and patterns. It also has some great crisp details. I am hopeful this playful treasure will bring a bit of whimsy and mystery to your home or office. How Sign was created..... After the black gesso primer dried, I used a fancy new texturing product imported from England to create that luscious ripe heart that pops right off the canvas. Then I used acrylic modeling paste to create slight ridges that would eventually define that outer heart shape. Once those layers dries, I painted many many many layers of abstract expressionist background imagery. I painted lines and color fields, I also used stencils to layer in some subtle patterns as well. I did use tiny bits of iridescent greens and golds throughout, so this piece does shimmer faintly in the light. Once all of that background work dried, I used tiny detail brushes to paint the heart-sign and to add the words, "I am watching for a sign." Sign was painted on a rigid canvas panel. The edges of the panel have been painted, so this piece looks lovely displayed just as it is on a small stand or decorative easel. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no glass or matting.
