Taking Risks

Completed in 2007

8" x 10"

Acrylic on gallery stretched canvas

The words in this piece read:  Just don't look down.

(Enlarged to show details.  This piece is visibly textured and many of the lines are raised three-dimensional ridges.)

These new pieces mark an important change in my work.  A return to something essential that went dormant for a while.  A kind of whimsical joy.  A sense that all is right with the world.  It feels so good to find that deep optimism again.  To see happiness in my art.  Contagious happiness.  These new pieces were a thrill to create and I hope they bring you smiles, too.

Oh this sweet cotton candy treat makes me feel so good.  With that brave heart hopping off into who-knows-what.  And all those surprising bits of color peaking out here and there.  The words read:  Just don't look down.  Which I think is always good advice.  Keep your eyes on what you have to gain.

How Taking Risks was created.....   First, I used my fingers to push acrylic paint into these wonderfully organic and irregular raised ridges that became the lines of this piece.  I let those ridges dry.  Then the first layer of color is all fingerpainting.  That is where the texturing comes from.  I mix colors by patting the tips of my fingers in my palette first and then across the surface of the board.  As I lift my fingertips from the surface, they pull the paint up into tiny ridges and patterns.  It is a lovely affect.  I cleared that texturing from the heart, so that is the only smooth surface in this piece.  The next layers of color were applied with palette knives and brushes.

(The textured sides are painted to match so you can display this painting unframed if you like.)

This piece was created on a stretched canvas primed with black acrylic gesso.  The sides do have staples, but they are completely hidden under texture and paint.  This painting has finished sides and may be displayed unframed either directly on the wall or on a decorative display easel.  Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it required no matting or glass.
