Whispers is such an unexpected treat! I am really excited about this image and I hope it leads to a series of more earthy layered pieces. This painting reminds me of gardening. And antiques. And old phone polls where you see bits of posters that have been torn down or washed away over time. And graffiti. And poetry. And journaling, too. Short phrases were layered through this painting. Above and below soft washes of color. Color was blotted on, flicked on when wet, rubbed on, brushed on, and scrubbed off, too. I used every tool at my disposal to create this rich soup of color and language. And finally I placed that single quiet tree inside a small empty safe space. I am sure different folks will see different things in this piece and that makes me happy. I will say that this painting brings something specific to mind for me. I see the confusing world of thoughts and feelings that we humans inhabit contrasted with the peaceful clarity of nature. It reminds me both of how hard it is to be a human being and also how rewarding it is to get out of my head and into the woods. Some (but not all) of the phrases that are more or less legible in this piece include, "Accept the answers that come. No more hiding. Call me home. I have failed. It is hard to say no. You are here for a reason. Tell me what to do. I trust myself. I will not hide. Begin again. I will take my chances. We are forgiven." How Whispers was created..... This piece has many many layers of soft color washes and carefully painted words. Colors were brushed on and rubbed on and blotted up and scratched through to obtain the uniquely weathered old-yet-modern feel. Whispers was painted on a masonite panel. The edges of the panel have been painted, so this piece looks lovely displayed just as it is on a small stand or decorative easel. Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no glass or matting.
