What a wonderful fun painting.  This piece makes me very happy.  The colors here are really rich and satisfying.  Even more so in person.  And the textures feel good, too.  Natural.  The dogs are so expressive.  And the linework is so crisp and fluid.

I talk to my dogs all day long.  And it is hard for me to grasp that they will never say a human word back to me over the course of their entire lives.  Because we DO communicate.  Better than I communicate with most humans!  Dogs just don't need words.  And sometimes they remind me of how frivolous words can be.  And of how much harm words can do, too.  The world might be a much better place if people used fewer words and expressed themselves through actions that were more true to their natures.

I am hopeful this unusual abstract painting brings warmth and knowing smiles to the home of some fellow dog-lover out there.

How Woof was created.....   After the black acrylic gesso dried, I applied a thick layer of fine artist grade stucco all around the outside edges of the canvas and along two strips that would divide the canvas into three "windows".  I left those window areas smooth and texture-free.  Once that underpainting dried, I used a wide variety of brushes and a soft cloth to apply layers of earthy hues over the whole piece.  I built those colors up over many many layers.  And finally I completed the piece with a tiny 18/0 detail brush, painting the wonderfully expressive dogs and the word.

(The sides are textured and painted so you can display your new artwork unframed if you like.  This is a digital photo.  The detailed scans shown above are more accurate.)

Woof was painted on a 6" x 12" stretched canvas.  The sides of this piece DO have staples but they are covered by layers of texture and color and they do not show at all.  This painting looks lovely displayed as it is without framing either directly on the wall or on a small decorative easel or stand.  Or it can be easily and affordably framed as it requires no matting or glass.
